Heavy Duty Tarpaulins — The UK's Toughest Heavy Weight Covers

Our heavy duty tarpaulin range is built for demanding, long-term applications where durability and weather resistance are non-negotiable. Every heavy duty tarpaulin we supply comes rated 170gsm to 350gsm — the professional standard across UK agriculture, construction, and haulage. These are not consumer tarps. These are the same covers used by MOD contractors, NHS estates teams, major UK hauliers, and thousands of British farmers.

Heavy Weight Tarpaulin Specifications

Our heavy weight tarpaulin range delivers exceptional performance in the harshest British conditions. Every tarp features:

  • 170gsm to 270gsm UV-stabilised polyethylene construction — the professional standard for agriculture, construction, and haulage
  • Heavy-duty reinforced brass or aluminium eyelets every 75cm — for secure lashing and tie-down in all conditions
  • Triple-stitched hems and corner reinforcement patches — resists tearing at stress points under heavy loads
  • 100% waterproof double-sided PE laminate — water-shedding performance that outlasts cheaper single-coat alternatives
  • High-tenacity anti-rip weave for superior tear resistance — engineered to survive repeated handling and deployment
  • Rot-proof, mould-resistant, and cold-crack resistant — safe to store and use at -20°C to +60°C
  • Sizes available from 2m up to 20m × 50m — standard stock sizes, plus bespoke cut-to-order

Ideal Applications

These tarps are trusted for the most demanding jobs across UK industry:

  • Agricultural machinery, hay bale, and silage covering — our 200gsm–250gsm tarps are the UK farmer's standard
  • Construction site material and scaffold protection — passed contractor site inspections nationwide
  • HGV and lorry load securing and weather protection — used by UK haulage fleets daily
  • Long-term outdoor equipment and vehicle storage — UV stabilisation prevents degradation year-round
  • Industrial waste skips and container covers — 270gsm+ for skip hire and waste management
  • Groundsheets for camping, events, and festivals — the 200gsm range is tough enough for repeated use
  • Scaffolding debris and weather containment — fire-retardant options available on request

Choosing the Right Heavy Weight Tarpaulin GSM

GSM (grams per square metre) is the most important factor when selecting a heavy weight tarpaulin. Higher GSM means a denser weave, heavier reinforcement, and longer service life under demanding conditions:

  • 140–170gsm: General heavy outdoor use — garden furniture, vehicle covers, temporary roofing. Good all-rounder at entry-level price.
  • 185–200gsm: The UK professional standard. Agriculture, construction, HGV loads. Expected lifespan of 5–8 years with regular outdoor use.
  • 250–270gsm: Farm-grade. Silage, hay bales, long-term machinery storage. Anti-shrink weave resists high wind loading on exposed sites.
  • 350gsm: Maximum industrial protection. Heavy machinery groundsheets, quarry and aggregate sites, permanent outdoor installations.

Compare Our Tarpaulin Ranges

Need something lighter? Our medium weight tarpaulins (120–170gsm) offer excellent everyday performance at lower cost. For extreme permanent installations, explore our PVC tarpaulin range (420gsm+) for commercial-grade, indefinite outdoor protection. For specialist agricultural applications, see our canvas tarpaulins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our 200gsm–270gsm tarps typically last 5–10 years outdoors with regular use. The UV stabilisation in our polyethylene weave prevents photo-degradation from British sunlight, while the rot-proof laminate resists breakdown from rain, dew, and condensation. Actual lifespan depends on UV exposure, mechanical handling frequency, and whether the tarp is stored folded or flat when not in use.
Yes — our 185gsm, 200gsm, and 250gsm heavy weight tarps are widely used by UK farmers for silage clamps, bale covers, and crop protection. The anti-rip weave handles the repeated folding and unfolding required for seasonal agricultural use, and the UV stabilisation maintains waterproof performance through extended outdoor storage. For silage specifically, we recommend the 250gsm green/brown as the most durable option.
Yes — we supply bespoke heavy weight tarpaulins cut to any dimension up to 20m × 50m in a single sheet. Custom sizes are available for HGV trailer covers, agricultural buildings, and industrial groundsheets. Call our trade team on 01744 520 110 or email sales@tarpaulinsuk.uk for a quote. Volume pricing is available for orders of 10+ tarps.
PE (polyethylene) tarps in this range are lightweight relative to their strength, cost-effective, and suitable for the vast majority of agricultural and construction applications. PVC tarps are heavier, more rigid, and designed for permanent or semi-permanent installations — they offer superior tear strength and a significantly longer lifespan (15–20 years) but cost considerably more. For most heavy-duty applications, a quality 200–270gsm PE tarp is the right choice. If you're covering the same location permanently, consider our PVC range.
