A greenhouse or polytunnel cover has to take wind, sun and rain season after season, and a plain polythene sheet tears the first time a gust catches a corner. This 260gsm leno tarpaulin, in white or green, is built differently. It is low-density polyethylene reinforced with a high-density polyethylene mesh, the leno construction growers and builders use when a sheet has to be both tough and light. Instead of eyelets, a 7cm woven PE belt runs along both sides for fixing, so you can fasten it tightly and evenly to a frame, batten or rail. On the white sheet the belt holes are pre-punched every 10cm; on the green sheet the fixing points are supplied closed and you pierce them where you need them. It is tear resistant, water resistant and UV resistant. It comes in 29 sizes from 2m x 2m to 4m x 20m, including 20m-long rolls in 1.5m, 2m, 3m and 4m widths.

Why it works

Mesh-reinforced, so it doesn't tear

The high-density polyethylene mesh inside the sheet acts like a skeleton. A puncture or nick stays small instead of running across the sheet, which is the usual way a polythene greenhouse cover fails in its first windy spell. At 260gsm it is a heavy-duty weight, yet it still handles far more easily than canvas or PVC.

Fixing belts instead of eyelets

Eyelets concentrate the load on a few points, and those points are where a cover rips. Here, each of the two fixing edges carries a 7cm woven PE belt. On the white sheet it is punched with holes every 10cm, giving a fixing point every hand's width. On the green sheet the fixing points come closed, so you pierce them at the spacing your frame needs. Either way the tension is spread along the whole edge and the sheet can be pulled drum-tight over a frame.

Water and UV resistant

The polyethylene sheds rain and is UV resistant, so it stands up to long periods in the sun on a greenhouse roof, a log store or a covered work area.

Choosing the right option

Start with the colour. White is the traditional choice for greenhouses, polytunnels and site covers; green blends into gardens, allotments and fields. The white sheet's belt holes are ready to use, while the green sheet's fixing points must be pierced first, which lets you set your own spacing. Sizes are listed width first, then length, exactly as the sheets are made. Some sizes appear in both orientations, such as 2m x 3m and 3m x 2m. Measure your frame and add enough on every side to reach your fixing rail or batten. For a small greenhouse roof, a cold frame or a log store, 2m x 2m to 3m x 4m is usually right. Larger greenhouses, trailers and work areas suit 3m x 5m to 4m x 8m. The 10m, 15m and 20m lengths are for polytunnel sides, long screens and walkways; choose the width to match the height of the run. Installation, use and care

Lay the sheet over the frame with the fixing belts on the edges you want to secure. On the green sheet, first pierce the fixing points you need with a hole punch or a hot nail. Fix through the belt holes with screws and washers into timber battens, cable ties or clips onto tube frames, or cord laced through the holes. Use every few holes, working from the middle outwards so the tension stays even. Keep the sheet off sharp edges and fit padding where it crosses bolts or brackets. Clean it with water and a soft brush.

FAQ

Does it have eyelets?
No. It has 7cm woven PE belts on both sides, which spread the load better than eyelets. The white sheet's holes are pre-punched every 10cm.

Are the holes on the green sheet open?
No. The green sheet's fixing points are supplied closed, so you pierce them yourself before use. Piercing tools are not included.

Can I use it to re-cover a greenhouse or polytunnel?
Yes, that is a main use. It is mesh-reinforced, tear resistant and UV resistant.

What is leno?
