When a standard woven tarp would tear, scuff through or crack in the cold, reach for this. It is a 560gsm tarpaulin of PVC-coated polyester, the heaviest plastic tarpaulin in our range. Use it where the cover gets dragged, walked on, weighted down or left out all winter. Farmers put it over hay and machinery, landscapers use it as a drag sheet and patio protector, and boat owners use it as a winter cover. It comes in olive green and blue, with brass eyelets every 50cm and riveted corners built to take tension.

Why it works

PVC-coated polyester, not woven polyethylene

Most lightweight tarpaulins are woven polyethylene tape with a thin laminate. This sheet is different: it has a polyester base fabric fully coated in PVC. That construction gives it a smooth, closed, waterproof surface that does not fray at a cut or scuff, and it resists abrasion far better when dragged over concrete, gravel or paving. At 560 grams per square metre it is heavy enough to stay put in wind and lie flat as a groundsheet.

Stays flexible in the cold

PVC-coated fabric stays supple in sub-zero conditions, so the sheet can be folded, unrolled and re-tied on a frosty morning without cracking. It is also rotproof and shrinkproof, so a damp sheet put away wet will not rot, and it keeps its size season after season.

Fixings built for tension

Large 20mm brass eyelets are set every 50cm into rope-reinforced hems, so there are plenty of fixing points and the load is spread along the edge rather than onto a few holes. All four corners carry a chunky three-rivet reinforcement patch, the point where a tarpaulin under strain usually fails first.

Choosing the right option

Measure the item you are covering, then add enough on each side to reach the ground or a tie-down point. Because these sheets are produced to finished size, the size you order is the size you get, give or take no more than 5cm. You do not need to allow for the hem shrinkage that affects cut-size woven tarps. For a groundsheet or drag sheet, 2m x 3m or 3m x 3m is the easiest size for one person to move. Olive green blends into rural settings and comes in all ten sizes; blue is currently offered in 2m x 3m, 3m x 3m and 10m x 14m. If you need a lighter, cheaper cover for occasional use, our 200gsm and 250gsm polyethylene tarpaulins are the better value choice. Choose this 560gsm sheet when abrasion, weight and year-round exposure matter.

Installation, use and care

Secure the sheet with bungee cords or ball bungees rather than rigid fixings such as cable ties or metal hooks, which put too much strain on single eyelets. Use all the available eyelets so the load is spread evenly. Avoid dragging the sheet over sharp edges under tension. To clean, brush off debris and wash with water and a mild detergent. Let it dry before long-term storage, and fold or roll it loosely. The larger sizes are very heavy, so plan for two people when handling 6m x 9m and above.

FAQ

Is a 560gsm PVC tarpaulin fully waterproof?
Yes. The polyester base is fully coated in PVC, giving a closed waterproof surface. It is suitable for long-term outdoor covers and groundsheets.

How is it different from a polyethylene tarpaulin?
Polyethylene tarps are woven tape with a laminate. They are lighter and cheaper but wear through faster when dragged, and can stiffen in cold weather. PVC-coated polyester is heavier, far more abrasion resistant and stays flexible below freezing.

Will the finished size be smaller than stated?
These sheets are made to finished size. The manufacturing tolerance is no more than 5cm, so there is no large hem allowance to account for.

How should I tie it down?
Use bungee cords or ball bungees through every eyelet. Avoid cable ties and metal hooks, which concentrate the load on individual eyelets.
