UV Protected Waterproof Tarpaulin Groundsheet 80gsm

For a cheap, quick waterproof cover that you can throw over something today and fold away tomorrow, an 80gsm economy tarpaulin does the job. This lightweight, easy to handle range is widely used as a temporary waterproof cover at home and at work. Typical uses are camping groundsheets, wood stack covers, building site covers, sandpit covers, garden furniture covers, pallet covers and salt stack covers. It has 12mm aluminium eyelets at metre intervals in rope reinforced hems, and it stays flexible even in sub-zero temperatures. It comes in green or blue and 19 cut sizes, from a small 1.2m x 1.8m sheet up to a huge 18m x 33m.

Why it works

Light, cheap and waterproof

The sheet is an HDPE weave with LDPE lamination, at 80gsm with an 8 x 8 weave count. The woven core gives it strength, and the laminated coating makes it waterproof. Because it is so light, one person can handle even the larger sizes, and it folds down small enough to keep in a car boot, a shed or a rucksack.

Made for outdoor use

The tarpaulin is UV protected, rotproof and shrinkproof, so it can be packed away damp without rotting, and it keeps its size. It remains flexible in sub-zero temperatures, which makes it useful for winter covers over log piles, salt stacks and garden furniture, when stiffer sheets can crack.

12mm eyelets every metre

12mm aluminium eyelets are set at one-metre intervals in rope reinforced hems. The rope inside the hem gives each eyelet a strong edge to pull against, and the spacing gives plenty of fixing points for bungees, pegs or cord.

Choosing the right option

Measure the item you are covering, then add enough on every side to reach the ground or your fixing points. All sizes are cut sizes, which is the size of the material before it is made into a tarpaulin, so the finished tarp can be up to 30cm shorter. Allow for that when you choose. The 1.2m x 1.8m to 2.4m x 3.0m sizes suit groundsheets, sandpits, log stores and small furniture sets. The 2.7m x 3.5m to 4.5m x 6.0m sizes cover patio sets, trailers, cars and material stacks. The larger sizes, up to 18m x 33m, cover salt and aggregate stacks, roofs and whole work areas. Green blends into gardens, woodland and farmland; blue is the traditional colour for general-purpose covers. The 4.0m x 5.0m and 18m x 33m sizes are currently available in green only. A camouflage version is also available as a separate listing. For a cover that stays out all year or takes heavy wear, step up to a 110gsm or heavier tarpaulin; 80gsm is designed as a lightweight, low-cost temporary cover.

Installation, use and care

For the longest life, always fasten the tarpaulin securely. We recommend bungee cords or ball bungees through the eyelets, and using all the available eyelets so the load is spread evenly. We do not recommend rigid fixings such as cable ties or metal hooks, as they put too much strain on individual eyelets. Tension the sheet so it does not flap in the wind, keep it away from sharp edges, and let it dry before folding it away.

Is an 80gsm tarpaulin waterproof?
Yes. The woven HDPE core is laminated with LDPE, so the sheet is waterproof. It is also rotproof, shrinkproof and UV protected.

Can I use it as a tent groundsheet?
Yes. It is a popular camping groundsheet. Choose a size a little smaller than your tent's footprint so rain cannot run onto the sheet and under the tent.

Will it crack in the cold?
No. It remains flexible even in sub-zero temperatures.

Is the finished size exactly as listed?
No. The sizes are cut sizes, so the finished tarpaulin can be up to 30cm shorter once the hems are made.
