When you need to keep the rain off something for days or weeks, without paying for a heavy-duty sheet, a standard 110gsm tarpaulin is the practical choice. This blue 110gsm tarp is a step up from a basic 80gsm sheet, with a closer 10 x 10 weave count, yet it stays lightweight, easy to handle and good value. It is used for temporary covers of all kinds: hay tarps, groundsheets, building site covers, market stall covers, boat covers, DIY and decorating covers, and garden tarps. It is waterproof, rotproof, shrinkproof and UV protected, with aluminium eyelets every metre and rope reinforced hems.

Why it works

A closer weave than an entry-level tarp

The sheet is an HDPE weave with LDPE lamination on both faces. At 110gsm and a 10 x 10 weave count, the weave is tighter than an 80gsm economy tarp, which gives a stronger, more tear resistant sheet for a small step up in weight. The laminated coating is what makes it waterproof; the woven core is what gives it strength.

Light enough to handle on your own

Because it is lightweight, one person can unfold it, throw it over a stack or a vehicle and fix it down. It folds small for storage in a van, a shed or a boot, so it is always to hand when the weather turns. The sheet is rotproof and shrinkproof, so it can be packed away damp without rotting or losing size, and it is UV protected for use outdoors.

Eyelets every metre and a rope reinforced hem

Aluminium eyelets are fitted at roughly one-metre intervals around the edge, and the hems are rope reinforced so the eyelets have something strong to pull against. That gives plenty of fixing points for bungees or rope.

Choosing the right option

Measure what you are covering, then add enough on every side to reach the ground or your fixing points. The sizes shown are cut sizes, which is the size of the material before it is made into a tarpaulin, so the finished tarp can be up to 30cm shorter. Allow for that when you choose. The 1.83m x 3.6m and 2.7m x 3.6m suit groundsheets, log piles, small trailers and DIY jobs. The 3.6m x 5.4m to 5.5m x 7.0m sizes cover cars, boats, stacks of materials and small roofs. The 7.0m x 9.0m, 7.0m x 11.0m, 9.0m x 14.0m and 15.0m x 15.0m cover hay stacks, machinery, large roofs and whole work areas. For a cover that stays out all year, or for heavy loads and haulage, choose one of our heavier polyethylene tarpaulins instead; 110gsm is designed as a lightweight, great value temporary cover.

Installation, use and care

For the longest life, always fasten the tarpaulin securely. We recommend bungee cords or ball bungees through the eyelets, and using all the available eyelets so the load is spread evenly. We do not recommend rigid fixings such as cable ties or metal hooks, as they put too much strain on individual eyelets. Tension the sheet so it does not flap in the wind, and keep it off sharp edges. Let it dry, then fold it for storage.

Is a 110gsm tarpaulin waterproof?
Yes. The woven HDPE core is laminated with LDPE, making the sheet waterproof. It is also rotproof, shrinkproof and UV protected.

What is the difference between 80gsm and 110gsm?
The 110gsm sheet has a closer 10 x 10 weave count and more material per square metre, so it is stronger and more tear resistant while still being lightweight.

Is the finished size exactly as listed?
No. The sizes are cut sizes, so the finished tarpaulin can be up to 30cm shorter once the hems are made.

How should I tie it down?
Use bungees or ball bungees through all the eyelets. Avoid cable ties and metal hooks, which strain single eyelets.
