Ripstop weave that stops tears spreading

Polyester yarns are woven into the cotton at regular intervals, which you can see as the fine white grid on the grey face. If the canvas is caught on a sharp edge, the polyester threads stop the tear running, so damage stays local. That matters on a cover that is pulled over timber, machinery or brickwork again and again.

Proofed, not waxed

Instead of a traditional wax process, this canvas is chemically treated to make it water resistant. The result is a canvas that is lighter and easier to handle and fold, with a drier feel than wax-processed canvas tarps. It is 15oz before treatment and 17oz once proofed, heavy enough to lie well and resist wind. As a cotton canvas it is water resistant rather than fully waterproof. Fixing points

12mm brass-plated eyelets are set at 2ft (roughly 60cm) intervals in stitched hems, with a strengthening tab behind each eyelet so it has a firm fixing point.

Choosing the right option

The sizes given are cut sizes: the size of the canvas before it is hemmed. Allow for the finished sheet being up to 30cm shorter. Canvas can also shrink a little with changes in temperature, so choose a size with some overhang rather than an exact fit. The 4ft x 6ft and 6ft x 10ft suit garden furniture, log stores and small machinery. The 12ft x 12ft and 8ft x 20ft suit vehicles, trailers and long timber stacks. Installation, use and care

Secure the canvas with bungee cords or ball bungees through every eyelet rather than rigid fixings such as cable ties or metal hooks, which strain single eyelets. Because the canvas is dyed and treated, take care when it is first used over light-coloured surfaces or items, as there is a small risk of colour transfer. Let the canvas dry fully before folding and storing it to avoid mildew, and store it in a dry, ventilated place.
