Hay and straw stacked outside need a cover that keeps the worst of the rain off the top and still lets the bales breathe. A plastic sheet traps moisture, so the top layer sweats and goes mouldy. This 140gsm haystack cover is made from non-woven polypropylene fleece, which is water repellent, breathable and UV resistant. Rain runs off the surface while moisture from the bales escapes through the fabric, and the fleece dries quickly in the sun. At 9.8m x 6m it covers a long stack of round bales or a tall stack of small squares, and you can cut it down to fit a smaller stack. It is used by farmers, contractors, livery yards and smallholders for hay, straw, grain and compost.

Why it works

Breathable, so the bales don't sweat

Hay and straw carry moisture, and a plastic sheet traps it against the bales. Non-woven polypropylene lets water vapour out and air in, so the top of the stack stays drier and fresher than it would under polythene. The fabric dries quickly after rain.

Water repellent and UV resistant

The fleece sheds rain from the top and sides of the stack rather than soaking it up, and it is UV resistant, so it stands up to a season outside in the sun. It is water repellent, not fully waterproof. That is deliberate: a fully waterproof sheet would stop the stack breathing.

Cut it to fit

Non-woven fabric does not fray like a woven sheet, so you can cut it with scissors or a knife to suit a smaller stack, a trailer or a compost bay. Because there are no eyelets to work around, you can cut it wherever you need.

Where it's used

Farms and contractors use it over stacks of round and square hay and straw bales in the field or yard. Livery and equestrian yards cover hay stacks at the edge of open-sided barns. Smallholders cover grain, feed and compost heaps. It can also be used as a breathable dust and weather cover over boats, trailers and vehicles in storage.

Choosing the right option

Measure the length of your stack and its height plus width across the top, then compare with 9.8m x 6m. Laid lengthways over a stack, the 6m width runs up one side, across the top and down the other. That suits a two- or three-high row of round bales, or a stack of small squares about 2m wide and 2m high, with enough left at each side to weight down. For a shorter or narrower stack, cut the cover to fit. If you need a fully waterproof cover, for example over machinery or building materials, choose one of our PVC or heavy-duty polyethylene tarpaulins instead. Our fleece cover is only for stacks that need to breathe.

Installation, use and care

Pull the cover over the stack so the top is fully covered and the sides hang down evenly. Weight the bottom edge every metre or so with sandbags, tyres or timber, or nail it to a timber stack base. Add more weight on exposed sites. Check it after strong winds. When it is not in use, let it dry, shake off loose straw and fold it away out of the sun.

Is it waterproof?
No. It is water repellent and breathable, so rain runs off while moisture from the bales escapes. That keeps hay fresher than a sealed plastic sheet.

Does it have eyelets?
None are published for this cover. Hold it down with sandbags, tyres or weights along the edge, or nail it to timber.

Can I cut it?
Yes. The non-woven fabric can be cut to size without fraying.

How many bales will it cover?
That depends on bale size and stack height. Measure the stack's length, and its height plus width, against 9.8m x 6m.
