A striped sheet is the traditional look of a British market stall. This is a 170gsm striped tarpaulin made for stall roofs and side sheets, in red and white, blue and white or green and white. It is waterproof, rotproof, shrinkproof and UV protected, so the stripes stay bright through a season in the sun. It has aluminium eyelets every metre on all four sides and plastic corner reinforcements, so it can be fixed tight to a stall frame and put up and taken down week after week. The sheet is woven to a 12 x 12 weave at 170gsm. That is a denser, heavier construction than a basic lightweight tarp, so it copes better with being unfolded, tensioned over a frame and packed away again at the end of every market day.

Choosing the right option

Measure your stall frame across the top and add enough to reach the edges and fixing points. The sizes shown are cut sizes: the size of the sheet before hemming, so the finished tarpaulin can be up to 30cm shorter. For a standard market stall roof, 2.7m x 3.5m or 3.5m x 3.5m is the usual choice. Longer stalls and double pitches suit 3.5m x 5.5m or 4.5m x 6m. The larger sizes, up to 9m x 14m, are used for gazebo runs, event canopies and big pitches. The stripes usually run along the longer length, although this cannot be guaranteed. Choose the colour to match your stall or brand: red and white is the classic market look, while blue and white and green and white suit food, garden and craft stalls. The 3.5m x 3.5m size is currently available in green and white only.

Installation, use and care

Fix the sheet with bungee cords, ball bungees or market stall clips through the eyelets, using all the available eyelets so the tension is spread evenly. Avoid rigid fixings such as cable ties or metal hooks, which strain single eyelets. On a windy day, tension the sheet tightly so it does not flap. Brush off dirt and let the sheet dry before folding it away, and store it somewhere dry between markets.
