Medium Weight Tarpaulin Specifications

Our medium weight range delivers consistent, reliable performance across a wide range of outdoor conditions. Every tarp features:

  • 120gsm to 200gsm UV-stabilised polyethylene — the proven all-round grade for garden, agricultural, and light trade use
  • Reinforced aluminium eyelets every 75–100cm — for secure bungee, rope, or ratchet-strap lashing in any weather
  • Double-stitched hems and corner reinforcement patches — resists tearing under load at the most vulnerable stress points
  • 100% waterproof double-sided PE laminate — sheds rain, sleet, and standing water without soaking through
  • Anti-rip, anti-tear woven PE weave — holds up to repeated folding, unfolding, and repositioning
  • Rot-proof and mildew-resistant — safe to leave outdoors or store in damp conditions year-round
  • Sizes from 1.8m up to 15m × 20m — stock sizes plus bespoke cut-to-order

Ideal Applications

These tarps are used daily across gardens, smallholdings, and worksites throughout the UK:

  • Garden furniture and patio covers — our 140gsm and 155gsm tarps are the most popular choice for winter protection
  • Log, firewood, and hay bale covers — keeps stored fuel and feed dry through wet British winters
  • Caravan, boat, and trailer seasonal storage — size up for full overlap on all sides for complete weather protection
  • Agricultural bale covers and machinery protection — our 170–200gsm tarps are the UK smallholder’s standard
  • Building material and scaffold protection on site — lightweight enough for easy one-person deployment
  • Lorry load covers and trailer sheets — grommets every 75cm for secure lashing at road speed
  • Temporary shelter, canopies, and event groundsheets — durable enough for repeated seasonal use

Choosing the Right Medium Weight Tarpaulin GSM

GSM (grams per square metre) is the key indicator of a tarpaulin’s thickness, strength, and expected outdoor life. Higher GSM means a denser weave, heavier laminate coating, and greater resistance to tearing and UV degradation. Within the medium weight range, the right choice depends on how long the tarp will be left outdoors, how much physical stress it will see, and your budget:

  • 110gsm: Light cover use — market stalls, greenhouse cladding, short-term weather protection. Expected outdoor life of 1–2 seasons with care.
  • 140gsm: Our bestselling grade. Garden furniture, log stores, general outdoor storage. 3–4 years continuous outdoor exposure. The best-value all-rounder for most domestic users.
  • 155gsm: Caravan, boat, and seasonal farm use. Greater tear resistance and UV protection than 140gsm. Popular for applications where the tarp stays in place for months at a time.
  • 170gsm: Extended agricultural and outdoor use. Top of the domestic medium weight range — suited to smallholders, allotment covers, and rural applications exposed to wind loading.
  • 200gsm: Step-up grade. Heavy agricultural, bale covers, machinery protection. Five or more years with routine care. The natural upgrade for users who have worn out lighter tarps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do medium weight tarpaulins last outdoors?
Our 140gsm medium weight tarps typically deliver 3–4 years of continuous outdoor performance. Heavier 155–170gsm grades can last 4–5 years with regular outdoor exposure. UV stabilisation throughout the PE weave is the key factor — it prevents the brittleness and cracking that cheap single-coat tarps develop after their first British winter. Lifespan increases significantly when tarps are stored folded and dry during periods when not in use.
What is the difference between 140gsm and 200gsm tarpaulin?
140gsm is our most popular all-round grade — light enough to handle easily alone, tough enough for 3–4 years of garden, log storage, or site use. 200gsm uses a denser PE weave and heavier laminate, giving noticeably greater tear strength, wind resistance, and UV protection. At 200gsm you are moving into the agricultural tier: better suited to bale covers, machinery protection, and applications where the tarp is left permanently in place and subject to wind loading.
Are medium weight tarpaulins suitable for covering a caravan?
Yes — our 155gsm and 170gsm grades are particularly popular for caravan and motorhome seasonal storage. Choose a size that overlaps all sides by at least 50cm to prevent wind ingress. For caravans stored outdoors permanently through a full British winter, we recommend at least 155gsm; our 170gsm or 200gsm grades give longer service and resist wind flapping better. If you need a purpose-fit cover rather than a sheet tarp, call us on 01744 520 110 for bespoke sizing.
Can I get custom sizes for medium weight tarpaulins?
Yes. Standard stock sizes run from 1.8m x 2.4m up to 15m x 20m across the medium weight range. For bespoke cuts, oversized covers, or high-volume trade orders, call 01744 520 110 or email sales@tarpaulinsuk.uk. We offer competitive cut-to-order pricing with fast turnaround for trade customers, landscaping contractors, events companies, and farm supply.

Compare Our Tarpaulin Ranges

Need something lighter for occasional use? Our economy tarpaulins (80–110gsm) offer short-term cover at the lowest price point. For industrial, agricultural, or permanent installations, our heavy weight tarpaulins (170–350gsm) are the professional standard used by UK farmers, builders, and hauliers. For transparent covers — patio enclosures, greenhouse cladding, light diffusion — see our clear tarpaulins. For the longest possible outdoor lifespan on permanent structures, our PVC tarpaulins (420gsm+) offer commercial-grade indefinite protection.
